Fix Dell -The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined

Hello – I could use some help, and know there have been similar posts.  I have a Dell Inspiron 15-7569 and have really liked it.  I have not had it that long, but long enough the warranty expired.

Issue:

  • Getting this message when booting up “Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.”  It will then say ‘plugged in not recording’ if you look at the charging icon in the bottom right.
  • It was intermittent it seemed for a while, once in a while it would work (and still does on rare occasion) but we get this basically every time now, and so the laptop adjust the performance so using it becomes very slow.
  • I researched significantly online and see others have dealt with similar issues.

Based on what I found I have:

  1. Updated the System BIOS
  2. Used the diagnostic tools, and it confirmed the battery is good
  3. The adapter seems in good shape and fine (and has the green light indicator)
  4. Disconnected the internal battery to fully reset – when I did that I visually checked the adapter plug and it all seemed okay

I’m really open to suggestions!  Thanks.

Fix alert the ac power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined

Including make/model info for the laptop and ac adapter would have been helpful, in that people could go and look them up to try to better understand the problem.

In most cases a laptop doesn’t really know anything about the ac adapter, so it doesn’t have anything to say about it or it’s capability.

This leads me to believe that your laptop might be using USB-C for it’s charging port, and in that case, it could be wanting to negotiate with the AC adapter so that it can get the right or max voltage/watts that both the laptop and ac adapter can provide.

So, based on the lack of information, I’m going to have to initially assume that your laptop uses USB-C to charge, and that you are using the original AC adapter and USB-C cable that came with the laptop. I will include info/suggestions based on that and other potential scenarios, you will have to pick out the one’s that apply.

If you are using an aftermarket or replacement AC adapter that’s not compatible, is not able to provide the voltage/current the laptop wants/needs or if the laptop or AC adapter isn’t able to communicate, then a message like this could come up.

The thing to do would be to check the laptops user manual or go on-line to the makers site to find out what size power supply came with your laptop and is recommended. You can usually go with a larger or higher wattage USB-C power supply without issues, but you shouldn’t go lower or smaller than what the maker recommends.

If the AC adapter and the laptop are unable to talk and negotiate for a mutually compatible voltage/power setting, The laptop and AC adapter would/should automatically fall back to and and only operate at the legacy USB voltages and power levels (5 volts at x amps), which would normally OK for a phone or table, but would normally insufficient when it comes to powering or running a laptop due to it’s power demands/needs.

The thing is that the problem could be in the AC adapter or it’s USB-C port, the what I am guessing is a USB-C cable, the laptop’s USB-C port, the battery or the laptops power management system.

I’d start with what I would think/hope would be the easiest, if you happen to have one or more laying around, that would be to try another USB-C cable to see if it works.

Hopefully, the AC adapter is OK and the cable or the connectors is the issue, and a cable replacement/change will fix things.

Then I’d probably try a different AC adapter, I’d look around at the other AC adapters I have and check all the one’s that have USB-C ports, to see if I had one that has a reasonably high wattage rating, then I’d try that with one or more cables. The goal would be to see if you can get the laptop to “connect” to the AC adapter and “work” without giving the “I don’t know what is connected message”, it would be OK to get a “The wattage of the AC adapter is too low” message, because that would mean that the AC adapter and the Laptop was able to “talk” and the laptop is just letting you know that the AC adapter is too small.

You also could try using the laptop’s AC adapter with another device that charges with a USB-C cable, to see what happens and what that device says. Ideally, the device would “see” the AC adapter and start charging without a “I don’t know what’s connected” or a “I’m charging at standard rate, connect a proper AC adapter for faster charging” type message.

You also could go out and buy a replacement AC adapter to see if it works, you also could look into borrowing someone else’s USB-C AC adapter/charger preferable with their USB-C cable to see what happens. By using a known good AC adapter and cable, it would help point to where your problem is. In this case, it would point to the laptop and it’s USB-C port as the most likely place (more like only place) that the problem could be.

If the problem is with your laptop, then it could be a bad battery, a bad/damaged USB-C port or a different problem with the mother or daughter board(s).

I’m not High Speed enough to have a laptop that uses USB-C for charging, so I don’t know if charging is limited to a certain USB-C port or if any of the USB-C ports can be used. You will have to check the user manual or the makers website to get that info.

If you are lucky, then any USB-C port may support charging, so you might be able to use a different one to power/charge your laptop, which might mean that you could put off getting a/the damaged or non-functional USB-C port replaced/fixed until it was a good time for you to do so.

I think this pretty much covers the things that come to mind, assuming that your laptop uses USB-C for charging.

Finally, if your laptop is under any kind of warranty, then I’d recommend you contact the warranty provider, before you go and start taking the laptop apart. It shouldn’t make a difference, but it’s usually better/best to give the warranty provider first dibs/crack because it tends to result in fewer headaches.

Hope this made sense and was helpful.

Best wishes and good luck!
